Welcome to the website of Canton Chorus, a thriving and ambitious community choir based in the Cardiff suburb of Canton. As a community choir we are open to everybody – new members don’t have to undergo any form of audition. All we look for is enthusiasm and a willingness to learn; although the ability to read music is an advantage, it’s not a requirement.

Updated: May 12, 2022

We now have two exciting outdoor events planned. First, on 21 May we'll be having a social-gathering-plus-rehearsal in the grounds of St Catherine's Church, King's Road, Pontcanna from 2.0 pm (if wet, in the church hall).

Then on Saturday 25 June the choir is planning a free concert to include Fauré's Requiem (to be performed with a small instrumental ensemble) and a selection of shorter choral pieces. Location to be confirmed - watch this space for further developments ...

Some two dozen chorus members were pleased to welcome back music director John Abraham for our 9 March rehearsal – which featured, in the words of Steve Bowkett, our Chair, ‘joyous singing, even with masks’.

As members will know (contact your part rep if you haven’t heard), we will have two further ‘live’ rehearsals in March with the lovely Anita Datta. Again numbers will be limited, so make sure you let us know beforehand if you plan to come. Then we will return to Zoom for a final March run-through, on 30 March. Following an Easter break, we hope to have an outdoor singing event in early May: watch this space for further updates

Having met to review possibilities in the light of an improvement in the Covid situation, the choir's Planning Group have decided to resume rehearsals on Faure’s Requiem on Wednesday 9 February, at the usual place (Canton Uniting Church) from 7.45 pm. As well as the Faure, more repertoire will be introduced as we proceed.

We will continue to limit numbers to 40 choir members for every rehearsal, to ask for masks to be worn and to observe social distancing guidelines. We will also require members to take a lateral flow test, with a negative result, beforehand.

APPEAL – We are looking into possibilities of streaming live rehearsals for those who can’t attend. Anyone with experience in such matters is asked to get in touch with our chair.
