The concert started with works by composers who were major players in the development of a distinct English music and who therefore influenced Vaughan Williams. His Mass in G-minor formed the second half of the concert.
The first half ended with two songs about the approach of night. The first a piece of High Victoriana by Sullivan and the second by a contemporary phenomenon, Eric Whitacre. Whitacre has exploited digital technologies to create impressive video performances constructed by melding many hundreds of individual records into a visual and musical whole.
